Caulking prevents moisture from running deep into logs through cracks. More than 25% of moisture content can allow for wood decay or fungus to grow. Chinking prevents moisture, wind, and bugs from entering between joinery of logs. Chinking is a good way to reduce heating/AC expenses and again, BUGS! Chink and caulk can be stained to match your home or painted to contrast your logs.
